Extraordinary Endurance

Gas light from the wreck of the Loch Ard, Photographer: Grace Blake, circa 1878, From the collection of: Heritage Victoria

Heritage Victoria has created a new online exhibition, ‘Extraordinary Endurance’, about the artefacts in its collection from the Loch Ard, which was wrecked off the coast near Port Campbell on 1 June, 1878 and is one of Victoria’s worst shipwrecks. Grace assisted the Heritage Curator in researching and photographing the artefacts, which include gaslight fittings, Victorian fairings, glassware, metalware and other assorted items.

This exhibition was three years in the making and adds a new dimension to the story of the ship’s only two survivors, Tom Pearce and Eva Carmichael, enabling global discovery of the artefacts for the first time via Google Arts & Culture.
