Rowing into history
When keen rower Grace Blake saw the World War I honour board in the clubrooms, she started a quest to find out more about her former club rowers who had fought in the Great War.
The result of Grace’s curiosity and detective work over many years is a free exhibition, Accounts from the Front, 1917, which is displayed at the Albert Park South Melbourne Rowing Club. On show are wartime letters and memoirs including excerpts from the diary of Harry Duncan, father and coach of 1956 Olympic rower and former club president Bob Duncan.
Grace is sure there are many more stories to be uncovered, so she’s hoping to make contact with the descendants of more club members who enlisted.
